A 49-year-old African woman has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined BD5,000 by the High Criminal Court for human trafficking and fraud.

The court also ordered her deportation following the completion of her sentence.

The woman was found guilty of luring two domestic workers into Bahrain with the promise of lucrative job opportunities through a Facebook advertisement.

She then seized their passports, forced them to work without proper permits, and subjected them to physical abuse.

The court heard testimonies from the two victims, who described being promised high salaries and flexible work permits.

However, upon arrival in Bahrain, they were taken to an apartment and held captive for a month, during which time they were subjected to beatings.

The woman also stole BD1,400 from them. An investigation revealed that the woman had a history of similar offenses. She had previously been charged with human trafficking and fraud.
