Sidewalk Squeeze: MP calls for action against sidewalk-hogging shops

MP Muhammad Janahi has advocated for organised inspection campaigns in response to a growing trend of shops extending their displays onto sidewalks and roads. These violations, Janahi noted, contribute to congestion and pose significant safety risks, particularly during emergencies such as recent fire incidents.
Janahi emphasised the necessity for authorities to conduct regular inspections to enforce existing laws and regulations governing the use of public spaces. He underscored the importance of educating shop owners on adhering to designated areas for displaying goods, aiming to ensure unimpeded access for fire and rescue vehicles during critical situations.
Janahi highlighted the campaign’s dual purpose of enhancing pedestrian flow and minimising congestion on sidewalks and streets. He stressed the need for heightened awareness among store owners regarding compliance with display regulations, promoting a safer and more orderly urban environment.
