The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Bahrain and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) hosted, from June 9 - 13, a technical mission aimed at enhancing local public nurseries in support of Bahrain’s National Afforestation Plan and supporting community engagement towards urban greening in the Kingdom.
The technical mission was backed by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture and led by Nursery Expert Dr. Mohamed Alnsour, the Director of Natural Resources at WADI, A Jordan-based organization that is committed to active ecological restoration through community engagement, outreach and knowledge-sharing.
Dr. Mohamed Alnsour visited nurseries in the Capital, Muharraq, and Southern and Northern Municipalities and engaged with several representatives from government entities, private sector and academia. The scope of the assessment included nurseries’ production, cultivation methods, supply chains and distribution strategies. Dr. Alnsour also held technical meetings with the Municipalities to understand the management, challenges, and opportunities of nursery production systems and viability and planting indigenous trees.
The insights gathered during the mission will lead to a set of strategic recommendations to enhance the supply chain system and identify the most effective contributions of public nurseries to the National Afforestation Plan. The findings will inform a comprehensive strategy and technical plan to optimize the use of the public nurseries’ production and incentivize community engagement.
The mission is part of UN-Habitat and FAO’s ongoing project with the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, “Building Greener and Sustainable Cities”. The project aims to strengthen capacities and improve the quality of selected green public spaces for Bahrainis, in addition to mobilize community engagement to enhance urban greening in the Kingdom.
