Bahraini Woman Makes History as First Arab Vice-Chair of UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

In a historic achievement, Shaikha Hessa bint Ali Al Khalifa has been elected as the Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) for 2025, marking a significant milestone for Bahrain's space sector. This appointment makes Sheikha Hessa the first Bahraini and Arab woman to hold this prestigious position within the United Nations.

The announcement was made during the 67th session of COPUOS, held by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) from June 19 to 28, 2024, at the Vienna International Centre.

Commenting on this achievement, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Asiri, CEO of the National Space Science Agency (NSSA), stated, "We are extremely proud and delighted with the unanimous selection of Shaikha Hessa Al Khalifa by the members of UNOOSA. This reflects the international standing of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which has been established by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister as well as the directives of His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, National Security Advisor, Commander of the Royal Guard, and Secretary-General of the Supreme Defense Council."

Commenting on her historic appointment, Shaikha Hessa bint Ali Al Khalifa said, "I am honoured to be chosen to take on the role of Vice-Chair of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space for 2025. This historic moment not only reflects the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to space exploration and leadership but also represents a significant step forward for Arab women in the field of space, future sciences, and diplomacy."
