As the summer sun beats down, it’s important to take steps to protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Sunburn not only causes immediate pain and discomfort, but can also increase your long-term risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging. Fortunately, there are several simple strategies you can employ to avoid that painful, red glow.

1. Slather on the Sunscreen

Sunscreen is your first line of defense against sunburn. Look for a broad-spectrum formula that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and has an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. Apply liberally - most people don’t use enough, missing spots that end up burning. Reapply every 2 hours, and more frequently if swimming or sweating.

2. Seek Shade

When possible, limit your direct sun exposure, especially during the peak hours of 10am to 4pm when the sun’s rays are strongest. Find shady spots under trees, umbrellas, or canopies, and take breaks from the sun throughout the day.

3. Wear Protective Clothing

Cover up with lightweight, tightly-woven fabrics that block UV rays. Opt for long sleeves, pants, hats with wide brims, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Look for garments labeled with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 30 or higher.

4. Time it Right

Plan outdoor activities for earlier or later in the day when the sun’s rays are less intense. The UV index, which ranges from 1 to 11+, can help you gauge the level of radiation risk. Limit time in the sun when the index is 3 or above.

5. Be Extra Careful with Sensitive Skin

Those with fair complexions, lots of moles, or a history of skin cancer are at greater risk of burning. Take even more precautions, and consider using a mineral-based sunscreen. Reapply more frequently and seek shade whenever possible.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy all the fun and benefits of summer while protecting your skin from painful and damaging sunburns. Stay safe and have a wonderful, burn-free season!
