With summer in full swing and temperatures soaring, the risk of car fires increases significantly. This can happen whether the car is moving or parked, due to several factors. These include the presence of flammable materials like perfume bottles or lighters, and the misuse of air conditioning units, according to automotive safety experts.

To prevent such hazards, experts recommend taking specific precautions. They emphasise the importance of opening car windows slightly when parked in the sun for extended periods. Additionally, they advise removing any flammable materials from the car and ensuring a fire extinguisher is readily available.

The experts stress the need to disconnect chargers, wires, and any electrical connections after turning off the car. This prevents any potential electrical hazards. They also recommend checking the car's cooling system and brake pads regularly. Maintaining proper coolant levels is crucial, and caution should be exercised when opening the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Experts warn against adding cold water to a hot radiator unless the engine is running, as this can damage the cylinder head.

To prevent tyre blowouts, the experts advise checking tyre pressure regularly and adjusting it according to the weather. They also recommend avoiding filling the fuel tank completely and suggest filling up in the evening. It's essential to check for fuel leaks in the tank, pipes, hoses, and fuel regulator, say the experts. Additionally, they recommend inspecting fuel hoses for cracks and ensuring all connections are secure.

Automotive safety experts warn against using fuel to clean engine parts and starting the engine before it dries completely. Furthermore, any welding on the fuel system should only be done after taking appropriate precautions.

The experts emphasise the importance of ensuring proper connections in the car's electrical system. They advise against using non-standard or unsuitable electrical wires and leaving wires uncovered, as this can cause friction with the car body. Additionally, they caution against allowing battery terminals to come into contact with the car's metal parts.

Finally, the experts recommend avoiding smoking in the car to prevent cigarette embers from falling and igniting flammable materials.
