In a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Interior's Customs Affairs, The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) of Bahrain, has intercepted two travel bags containing a large quantity of unauthorised surgical medical instruments. The bags were being brought into the Kingdom through Bahrain International Airport without the necessary import approvals from the NHRA. This action was taken because the instruments did not conform to international quality and safety standards for medical devices and supplies.

The alertness of customs officers at the airport led to the seizure of the bags, which were found to contain medical tools not licensed by the NHRA. Upon questioning the holder of the bags, the NHRA was contacted for inspection and verification, confirming the violation. Consequently, the holder was subjected to the applicable laws and regulations in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the bags were confiscated.

NHRA has initiated a full investigation to determine the purpose of importing these unauthorised medical tools. Additionally, the Authority has implemented preventive measures in coordination with relevant parties in the Kingdom to reduce similar incidents in the future. These measures are part of the NHRA's ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and high-quality healthcare sector.

NHRA emphasises the importance of following the approved guidelines and instructions for importing medical devices and supplies, as published on the Authority's website (https://www.nhra.bh/). This is crucial to guaranteeing the origin and quality of medical devices and supplies, ultimately safeguarding the health and safety of the community.
