The Kingdom of Bahrain has affirmed its position as a global leader in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, ranking 5th globally and 3rd in the Arab world in the 2024 ICT Development Index (IDI) published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This achievement marks the second consecutive year Bahrain has secured a top spot in the index, highlighting its drive for digital advancement.
Bahrain's impressive score of 97.5 points surpasses the global average of 74.8, reflecting its aim to exceed international benchmarks. This accomplishment aligns with the goals outlined in the country's comprehensive communications, information technology, and digital economy sector strategy (2022-2026). The strategy serves as a roadmap for Bahrain's continued rise as a leading ICT nation.
His Excellency Mohamed bin Thamer Al Kaabi, the Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, attributes Bahrain's success to the steadfast support of the government. He emphasises the alignment with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications remains focused on further advancing the ICT sector. Their consistent support provides the necessary impetus to achieve Bahrain's ambitious vision of building an advanced, sustainable economy that benefits both the Kingdom and its people. This aligns with the objectives of the Sixth National Telecommunications Plan, which outlines strategic policies for the ICT sector from 2023 to 2026.
Bahrain's efforts in promoting digital transformation across various economic sectors are evident in its top ranking. This focus contributes significantly to the country's sustainable development and strengthens its leadership in the ICT infrastructure sector, both regionally and internationally. The ultimate goal is for Bahrain to be among the top 10 countries globally in this sector, setting a precedent for achieving sustainable development and comprehensive digital transformation.
These positive results reflect Bahrain's economic leadership and technological prowess. They inspire further progress and development in this vital sector. The Minister extends his gratitude to all those responsible for this achievement, including the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and telecommunications companies. Their dedication and efforts have significantly enhanced technological development, infrastructure, competitiveness, and service quality, propelling Bahrain's ICT indicators to the highest international standards.
The ICT Development Index, published by the ITU, is a key feature of the Measuring the Information Society report and one of the most important global indicators for measuring progress in the ICT sector. Bahrain's remarkable performance in this index serves as an exemplary model for other nations aspiring to achieve excellence in the digital realm.
