A Bahraini man has been ordered to pay his wife BD 500 in compensation after insulting her during a phone call. The Civil Court ruled in favour of the wife after she filed a lawsuit against her husband.

The husband had admitted to using abusive language towards his wife during the phone call. He was previously fined BD 30 by a criminal court for the offense.

The wife's lawyer, Khalil Ibrahim, stated that the defendant's words had damaged his client's honour and reputation, and that the insult was delivered through a phone call. The wife had filed a police report, and the husband admitted to the charges, resulting in the criminal fine.

Ibrahim argued that the defendant's actions had caused his client emotional distress, prompting her to seek compensation.

The court acknowledged that compensation for emotional harm aims to address any damage to a person's honor, reputation, feelings, and emotions. The court also recognised that the amount of compensation for emotional harm should be proportionate to the damage suffered and should restore the victim's dignity.

The court concluded that the wife had undoubtedly suffered emotional harm due to the husband's actions and deemed BD 500 to be a suitable amount to compensate for the emotional distress she experienced.
