Attack on housemaid: Life sentence commuted

Manama

An Asian national convicted of attempting to beat a housemaid to death at a beach had his life imprisonment commuted to 15 years in prison.

Twenty three-year-old Daleep Bariar was earlier found guilty of attempting to murder 35-year-old Indonesian maid Karima Medi, who suffered severe injuries after being repeatedly struck on the head with a brick in November 2013.

Prosecutors said the accused agreed to kill the victim following the request of a friend, who reportedly got the victim pregnant.

It was claimed the accused had sex with her in the farm where he works, before he took her on his motorbike to Demistan beach. Meanwhile, the co-accused, also Asian national, followed them.

He allegedly then ushered Medi to a dark isolated place and hit her on the head with a brick, and his friend joined in.

Prosecutors said they left her back in the beach because they thought she was dead. They covered her with palm tree branches to hide their crime.

However, some local people found her lying in a pool of blood and immediately took her to Salmaniya Medical Complex, where she received treatment for fractured skull.

She was then flown back home in May last year, where she reunited with her family. She was admitted to a police hospital in Jakarta, where she continued to receive treatment.

Police earlier said Medi had run away from her employers the day before the attack. A brick, believed to have been used in the attack, was seized by police, along with the victim's clothes, according to High Criminal Court documents.

However, police could not find the person who got her pregnant.
