Couple get prison for attack on police station

Manama

The High Criminal Court sentenced a man and his girlfriend to three years each in jail for their involvement in a firebomb attack at Hamad Town police station.

The 34-year-old man reportedly spearheaded several Molotov cocktail assaults at the property. His 29-year-old co-accused filmed the events hiding in a covert place and uploaded it online.

However, they succeeded once as the second time, police officials discovered her hiding location and arrested her.

During questioning, she revealed the identity of her boyfriend to police.

"We became friends two years ago, and were constantly in touch with each other," the woman, who is a divorcee and mother of a girl child, told prosecutors.

"On the day of the incident, I went with him in his car. We later met other masked men, and discussed with them their roles in carrying out the attack.

"My duty was to record the assault, while the others would survey the area to ensure no police officers could find us. Seven men attacked the police station with firebombs."

The police officer who spotted the woman just before the attack said he kept an eye on her after he saw thugs holding firebombs coming from a residential area. "I saw several men carrying petrol bombs coming out, so I was sure something wrong was going to happen. So  I decided to scan the neighbouring area and saw a woman hiding and holding a camera. She was filming what was happening," the officer pointed out.

Police officers seized two cameras that were in the woman's possession.
