MP Ahmed Al Saloom, head of the Strategic Thinking Bloc and member of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee in the Council of Representatives, has announced a legislative initiative to revive the historic old Manama Souq.

Al Saloom revealed to our sister newspaper Al Ayam that the bloc, in collaboration with other MPs, is actively working on a comprehensive project to breathe new life into the Souq.

This initiative aims to secure necessary funding in the upcoming 2025-2026 national budget to initiate preparatory measures, including feasibility studies, architectural plans, and consultations.

“The current state of Manama Souq necessitates a collaborative effort between the legislative and executive branches to rescue this vital traditional tourist destination,” said Al Saloom.

“The Souq’s rich historical legacy, cultural diversity, and unique blend of traditions demand a largescale project to reimagine it while preserving its authenticity and architectural heritage.”

Al Saloom highlighted the Souq’s enduring appeal despite its lack of essential services, comfortable streets, parking facilities, and other visitor-friendly amenities.

He emphasised the need for swift action to enhance this historical landmark’s appeal to both locals and tourists.
