The Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) has launched a campaign calling for an extension of the summer work ban, which prohibits outdoor work between 12 pm and 4 pm. The campaign, dubbed "Extend the Shade," aims to increase the ban from two months to three months.

MWPS President, businesswoman Mona Al Moayyed stated that the society is in talks with the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry to garner support for the campaign. She emphasised that while Bahrain was a pioneer in implementing the sunshade ban in 2007, other Gulf countries have extended their bans to three months.

Moreover, she highlighted the positive impact of the ban, citing increased productivity and a decrease in heat-related illnesses among workers. She expressed optimism about the campaign's success, noting that the government, legislative bodies, and the private sector have consistently supported human rights and worker welfare.

The "Extend the Shade" campaign aims to protect the health and safety of workers during the summer months, particularly during the peak heat period. It highlights the importance of extending the work ban to reduce heat-related illnesses and ensure a safer working environment.

"We call on everyone to join us in this important change," said Madhavan Kallath, MWPS's General Secretary. "Together, we can protect the rights and health of our workers."

The campaign organisers believe that extending the work ban is not only an ethical imperative but also an investment in the country's social and economic progress.

It's worth noting that the midday work ban started from July 1, 2024 and it will conclude on August 31, 2024. This annual measure prohibits outdoor work under direct sunlight between the hours of 12 pm and 4 pm, aiming to safeguard the health and safety of workers during the hottest months of the year.

A contact number has been set up for citizens and residents to report any observations or infractions during the summer midday work ban period. The number is (32265727).
