The Public Prosecution is set to launch a nationwide campaign titled "Protection" on Wednesday, July 10th. This collaborative initiative is a significant effort to safeguard children from exploitation and cyber extortion. It unites various entities, including the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Waqf, the Ministry of Information, and the Ministry of Education, all aiming to enhance awareness and equip children and parents with the necessary knowledge to avert these crimes.
Mohammed Buhiji, Deputy Chief of the Family and Children's Prosecution, draws attention to the escalating severity of cyber exploitation and blackmail targeting children in this digital age. He stresses the pressing need for effective measures to counter this menace, which poses a grave risk to the well-being and development of the younger generation.
The campaign's primary goal is to educate the public on the nature of these insidious crimes. Cyber exploitation entails manipulating children through technology and online communication, preying upon their vulnerabilities for sexual, financial, or social gains. Blackmail in cyberspace involves threats to release private information or media to extort money, and material benefits, or coerce children into unlawful activities.
Buhiji points out the detrimental psychological impact of these crimes on children's mental health and personal development. He highlights the importance of Bahraini legislation, including the Restorative Justice Law for Children, which provides a legal framework for intervention and protection in cases of attacks against children in cyberspace.
The "Protection" campaign stresses the need for joint efforts between government agencies and civil society organizations to raise awareness among children and parents about online risks and safe practices. This includes providing educational and training programmes to equip children with the necessary skills to navigate the digital world safely.
Buhiji emphasises the importance of collaboration and open communication. Parents are encouraged to actively monitor their children's online activities and maintain open dialogues about any concerning situations. This collaborative approach aims to create a secure digital environment where children can thrive without fear of exploitation or cyber extortion.
The "Protection" campaign marks a significant endeavour to safeguard children in the digital age. By raising awareness, providing educational resources, and promoting collaboration, the campaign aspires to empower children and parents to navigate the online world safely and protect themselves from exploitation and cyber extortion.
