A Bahraini family involved in a tragic car accident in Iraq is expected to begin returning home next Sunday, with some family members already recovering and set to arrive on a Gulf Air flight.

The accident occurred in June 2024 on the international highway near the Iraqi city of Nasiriyah, claiming the life of one family member, Fawziya Al Najjar. The family was travelling in Iraq when their vehicle was involved in a collision. The accident resulted in the death of Ms. Al Najjar, whose remains were laid to rest in the Al Salim cemetery in Najaf, Iraq.

Six other family members sustained injuries and remain hospitalised in Nasiriyah. One of the injured, a 15-year-old boy, remained in critical condition and was treated in the intensive care unit. Two women in the family have undergone surgery for fractures sustained in the crash and are recovering.

Sources close to the family confirmed that several of the injured have recovered sufficiently to return to Bahrain. They will be transported back on a Gulf Air flight, with the first group expected to arrive next Sunday.

The family expressed their gratitude to the Bahraini Embassy in Iraq, led by Ambassador Khalid Al Mansour, for their unwavering support and assistance during this difficult time.

The Embassy has been instrumental in providing consular services and facilitating the repatriation process.

The News of Bahrain previously reported that the driver of the vehicle was in a state of denial, unaware of his mother's passing and with limited recollection of the accident.
