The Manama Souq Development Committee has completed its assessment of damages to shops affected by the fire that broke out in the market on June 12, 2024.

The committee has documented damages to 57 shops, with estimated total losses exceeding BD1.5 million, according to Riyadh Al Mahrous, Chairman of the Manama Souq Development Committee.

While the committee has initiated contact with property owners and those affected by the fire, the process is complicated due to the involvement of numerous heirs for some properties, with approximately 30 shops being rented out.

To address this, the committee has recommended providing facilities for shop owners and landlords affected by the fire, including offering soft loans for reconstruction or long-term investments in properties by official entities.

Revitalisation

These measures are aimed at stimulating economic activity in the Manama Souq and ensuring its revitalisation.

“We are awaiting a decision from higher authorities to protect the interests of the affected shop owners,” Al Mahrous stated. “The process involves many parties, but we are hopeful that instructions will be issued to get these shops back to business.”

Despite the incident, the Souq continues to attract customers, highlighting its enduring appeal. “We are seeing many customers coming to shop in the Souq due to the products and services on offer,” Al Mahrous noted. “The Souq holds a unique position, and action is needed to restore its appeal.”

Efforts

Moreover, Al Mahrous hailed the efforts of MP Ahmed Qarata who has been following the needs of the shop owners.

“His endeavours have been instrumental. He has been in contact with all involved parties to reach a middle ground and compensate the affected business owners,” he said.

The committee’s recommendations aim to address the challenges faced by the Manama Souq, ensuring its continued success and preservation of its cultural heritage.
