Southern Governorate Municipality Announces Plans to Upgrade Al Istiqlal Walkway

The Southern Governorate Municipality has announced plans to upgrade the Istiqlal Walkway, a popular public space in the area. The project will be tendered through the Tender Board website, with construction work encompassing a range of improvements.

The municipality confirmed that the project will include replacing the existing rubber flooring with asphalt, supplying and repairing smart fitness equipment, and developing the main entrance area.

The project will also encompass improvements to the children's play area and other infrastructure. The project follows a visit by the Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture, Wael Al Mubarak, to the area in November 2023.

During his visit, the minister reviewed the future development plan, which includes installing a climate control system, solar-powered lighting, upgrading facilities, and adding new play equipment for children and people with disabilities, as well as additional shade structures.

Abdullah Abdullatif, Chairman of the Southern Governorate Municipal Council, stated earlier that the Istiqlal Walkway is expected to undergo even more extensive upgrades, as confirmed by the Southern Governorate Municipality.

He emphasised the need for a complete renovation of the promenade, including dedicated pathways for people with disabilities.
