A recent court case in Bahrain highlighted the dangers of escalating disputes between neighbours. A 50-year-old man was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended in favour of probation, after being found guilty of assault against his 60-year-old neighbour.
The incident, which occurred in their shared apartment building, resulted in the victim sustaining a permanent disability, though the Lower Criminal Court determined the injury was not intentional. The altercation began when the two men, known to have a history of disagreements, crossed paths in the building’s elevator lobby.
The defendant, visibly agitated, verbally attacked the victim, who was holding a juice bottle. A physical fight ensued, spilling into the victim’s apartment. The defendant confessed to the assault in court, presenting video evidence captured by a camera mounted on his apartment door.
The footage showed him initiating the attack, while the victim attempted to defend himself by throwing the juice bottle at the defendant, causing minor injuries. The victim’s wife testified that she heard shouting outside their apartment and upon opening the door, saw her husband and the defendant engaged in a physical fight.
