The High Appeals Court is set to review of a case involving an Asian man accused of smuggling narcotics into the country.

The court has scheduled a hearing for August 4th to bring the defendant, currently in custody, before the court.

The case stems from an incident on November 27, 2023, when authorities at the Bahrain Post intercepted a package from an Asian country.

An X-ray scan raised suspicion, leading to the discovery of two bags containing a crystalline substance concealed within shampoo bottles. Laboratory analysis confirmed the substance to be methamphetamine, weighing 1103.5 grams.

The defendant, who was identified as the intended recipient of the package, was nabbed on November 29th when he arrived at the post office to claim it.

He admitted to being the recipient and was subsequently arrested along with the package.

A search of his residence, conducted with a warrant from the Public Prosecution, yielded a sensitive scale, which was also found to contain traces of methamphetamine.

The lower court had sentenced the defendant to five years imprisonment, a fine of 3,000 Bahraini dinars, and the confiscation of the seized items.

The court also ordered his permanent deportation from Bahrain upon completion of his sentence.

Investigations revealed that the defendant was part of a network involved in importing, trafficking, and distributing narcotics within Bahrain for financial gain.

The network operated in a structured and organized manner, with the defendant acting as the recipient of smuggled drugs, facilitating their distribution through the use of dead drop mailboxes.

The High Appeals Court will now hear the defendant's appeal and determine if the original sentence will be upheld or modified.
