The High Criminal Court in Bahrain has sentenced two Asian men to 15 years in prison and a fine of 5,000 Bahraini dinars each. The men were found guilty of possessing and attempting to smuggle heroin into the Kingdom.

The incident occurred on April 20th, 2024, when the first defendant, a young Asian man, arrived at Bahrain International Airport from an Asian country. He was carrying a single backpack and aroused suspicion among airport security personnel. Upon inspection, a significant amount of heroin was discovered hidden within the backpack, concealed in plastic bags sealed with tape and placed under the foam padding.

The defendant admitted to receiving the drugs from an individual in his home country and was tasked with delivering them to another individual in Bahrain.

Meanwhile, the second defendant, who was waiting for the first defendant in the arrival hall, was also apprehended. His suspicious behaviour, including filming passengers and staring intently at the first defendant, raised red flags. He confessed to being present to receive his brother, but a check of his phone revealed communication with the first defendant regarding the drug transaction.

Investigations revealed that both defendants were part of a larger drug trafficking network operating in Bahrain. The first defendant received the drugs in exchange for a substantial sum of money, indicating his role as a courier.

Further analysis of the second defendant's phone revealed images of unidentified locations marked with circles, a large number of pills, and dark-coloured drugs, suggesting his involvement in drug-related activities.

The court, after considering the evidence, sentenced both defendants to 15 years in prison and a fine of 5,000 Bahraini dinars each. They were also ordered to be deported from Bahrain after serving their sentences.
