The historic city of Muharraq is undergoing a transformation, led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning. The ministry has issued a request for proposals to manage various heritage sites, which involves the demolition of certain old villas and the restoration of those deemed worthy of preservation.

On 26 September, the Tender Board will evaluate submissions for this undertaking. The primary objective of the project is to safeguard Bahrain’s historical and cultural essence, rejuvenate Isa Al Kabeer Palace, and redevelop Muharraq while preserving its distinctive character.

The two-year contract includes general excavation and levelling works for the demolished villas, maintenance and repair of the old villas to be retained, and the design and construction of a visitor centre and three prototype houses as part of the Muharraq old city development.

Numerous architectural treasures, once the lifeblood of the city, now teeter on the brink of collapse. Nevertheless, efforts are being made to save these gems, ensuring Muharraq’s rich history is preserved for future generations.

The redevelopment encompasses 1.4 million square metres, featuring 12,000 square metres of green spaces, heritage buildings, new units, and restored structures. Parking facilities and movement corridors are also included in the plan.

Recently, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Amna Al-Rumaihi, noted the project’s progress during a panel discussion, emphasising adherence to guidelines established by royal directives from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The previous phase included several steps such as publishing the project’s guidebook, launching its official page, conducting field surveys, appointing a consulting firm, and initiating property expropriation.
