The Public Prosecution in Bahrain has concluded its investigation into an alleged bribery attempt by an Asian employee of an engineering company contracted by the General Sports Authority.
The employee is accused of demanding a bribe of BD30,000 from a contractor working for the Authority, claiming he could secure a contract for the contractor.
The investigation was initiated after the Public Prosecution received a report from the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security.
Complaint
The report included a complaint from the General Sports Authority, alleging that the employee had demanded the bribe from the contractor.
During questioning, the contractor stated, “I was shocked when this employee demanded a bribe from me. It’s simply not on.
I’ve always been a straight shooter, and I wouldn’t dream of offering a bribe. When he proceeded with his offer, I immediately informed the authorities to take action against him.”
The Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution Office conducted a thorough investigation, interviewing individuals from the General Sports Authority and other witnesses.
The prosecution also translated audio recordings of conversations between the suspect and the contractor, which confirmed the employee’s demand for the bribe.
Based on the evidence gathered, the prosecution issued an arrest warrant for the suspect. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the bribery attempt and acknowledged the audio recordings.
The Public Prosecution has ordered the suspect to be detained pending further investigation and has referred the case to the High Criminal Court on charges of bribery.
The hearing for the case is scheduled for August 7, 2024.
