Bahrain has etched its name into Olympic history at the 33rd Games in Paris, which run until August 11, 2024. Winfred Yavi's gold in the women’s 3000 metres steeplechase, clocking in at a remarkable 8 minutes and 52.76 seconds, not only shattered the Olympic record but also brought the first medal in this event for the Arab world, making Yavi a standout in international athletics.

The triumph was celebrated by dignitaries including His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority, and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee. Alongside him were His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Vice President of the General Sports Authority, and other officials who gathered to witness this historic moment.

The Bahraini delegation, in full support of Yavi, marked this milestone with great enthusiasm. This medal adds to Bahrain’s tally, which now includes two golds and two silvers in Olympic history.

Following Yavi’s victory, His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa expressed immense happiness, stating, “Our efforts have culminated in winning the first Olympic medal in Paris. Winfred Yavi delivered a performance worthy of Bahrain’s name, showcasing her fighting spirit and strong will. This achievement could not have been realised without the support of His Majesty the King and the continuous efforts of all members of the Bahraini delegation. We are proud of this achievement, which is just the beginning of more successes in the future.”

He stressed Bahrain’s focus on investing in sports and supporting athletes at the highest level. This medal serves as motivation for other Bahraini athletes in various disciplines to achieve outstanding results in the remaining Olympic competitions.

Bahrain’s Olympic journey continues today, Wednesday, with Salwa Eid competing in the semi-final of the women’s 400 metres. Salwa is aiming for the final, given her impressive global ranking and personal best time.
