The implementation of three ambitious development projects in the Mahzoora and Al Hajiyat areas of Riffa, Southern Governorate, has been announced by Engineer Sheikh Mishaal Al Khalifa, Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Works.
These initiatives aim to give the area a facelift by easing traffic congestion, expanding road capacity, and upgrading stormwater drainage systems.
The first project focuses on Mahzoora Avenue, Avenue 37, and Al Hajiyat Avenue. It plans to widen Mahzoora Avenue from two to three lanes between Road 3933 and Umm al-Naasan Avenue, increasing its capacity from 3,200 to 4,800 vehicles per hour—a whopping 50% increase.
The second project centres on expanding Avenue 37 and revising the intersection of Mahzoora Avenue and Avenue 37. This will involve adding a third lane and extending the road by 970 metres, along with establishing a new stormwater drainage network, improving pedestrian sidewalks, and sorting out traffic flow.
The third project focuses on Al Hajiyat Avenue and the roundabout at its junction with Jiddah Avenue. It will upgrade both avenues and introduce a new roundabout designed to elevate the intersection’s capacity from 800 to 1,500 vehicles per hour.
Each project will also include a bit of elbow grease with the reconstruction of adjacent roads, enhanced street lighting, underground utility channels, speed bumps, and traffic safety measures such as signs and road markings.
