Dr Essam Al Alawi has decided against running in the upcoming parliamentary by-election for the vacant Muharraq's 1st constituency seat, ending speculation about his candidacy. The deadline for submitting applications closed on Monday evening, with Al Alawi not submitting his nomination.
Al Alawi, the Director of Workforce Development at the Ministry of Health, had previously announced his intention to run. However, in a an Instagram post, he cited "unforeseen circumstances" and the importance of his current position as a senior executive in the Kingdom, a role he has held for 13 years, as reasons for his decision. He also emphasised his commitment to completing ongoing projects related to national human development.
Al Alawi further explained that his previous electoral programme, which he had meticulously developed, was not feasible to implement within the remaining two years of the current council's term.
He urged voters to choose the most competent candidate, prioritising wisdom, humility in dealing with others, and the ability to meet the needs of citizens.
Al Alawi was considered a strong contender, having secured second place in the previous election among 13 candidates. In the second round, he garnered 3,423 votes. In a previous statement, he expressed confidence in his chances of winning, predicting victory in the first round.
Al Alawi's withdrawal leaves the race open for other candidates vying for the vacant seat.
