The High Criminal Court has sentenced a 40-year-old man and his female accomplice to five years' imprisonment and ordered the confiscation of a gas cylinder.

The duo was found guilty of carjacking a woman and her daughter by threatening them that they would detonate the gas cylinder with a lighter.

The Public Prosecution charged the 46-year-old male defendant and his 32-year-old female accomplice with carjacking, specifically by imposing their will on the victims.

The prosecution alleged that the male defendant threatened the victims with a gas cylinder and a lighter, forcing them to exit their car before stealing the vehicle. They managed to overpower the woman's resistance, stole her belongings, and fled the scene.

The woman's husband, who testified in court, recounted the incident, stating that while his wife was in the car with their daughter in a market in East Riffa, he stepped out to visit a shop.

Shortly after, he heard loud noises and witnessed the defendants stealing the car, which belonged to his mother. "She informed me that the male defendant had held a large gas cylinder and a lighter, threatening to blow up the car if she didn't get out.

She quickly exited the car with our daughter. The defendants then fled, leaving the gas cylinder on the pavement," he said.

Another witness confirmed seeing the male defendant rolling a gas cylinder with the female defendant towards a parked car on the road. They forced the victim out of her car, stole it, and drove away, leaving the gas cylinder behind.

The officer who oversaw the case testified that investigations identified the defendants, who confessed to the crime after their arrest. The incident was captured on security cameras, and it was revealed that the male defendant had a history of theft.
