From traders to Trailblazers: The Dawoodi Bohra Community’s 139-Year legacy of integration and innovation in Bahrain

BY Ibrahim Zakiuddin Spokesperson, Dawoodi Bohra community, Bahrain

Hailing from India, members of the Dawoodi Bohra community travelled to Bahrain in 1885. What began as a journey of traders seeking prosperity has since evolved into a deep-rooted presence that blends Indian heritage with Middle Eastern culture.

Our simple lifestyle, rooted in humility and service, has significantly contributed to Bahrain’s growth. Today, the 800-strong Bohra community is a cornerstone of Bahraini society. Our entrepreneurial spirit thrives across various sectors, from construction and engineering to retail and hospitality.

Under the guidance of Sultan al Bohra Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the Dawoodi Bohras prioritise commitment to faith, community service and social welfare.

Our commitment to education, healthcare, and social welfare demonstrates a deep desire for peaceful coexistence. Sustainability is a core value of the Dawoodi Bohra community. Through initiatives like tree planting, waste reduction, and resource conservation, our community members in Bahrain work hard to protect and preserve the environment.

The Datwoodi Bohras’ philanthropic arm ‘Project Rise’ unites community members across the world in these efforts.

The recent focus in Bahrain on tree planting and composting is particularly inspiring, amongst other similar sustainable initiatives.

The Dawoodi Bohras of Bahrain are a living testament to cultural endurance. Through active engagement in time-honoured customs, we have forged a profound sense of belonging.

Our existence is a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, resonating with the pulse of Bahraini culture. As we celebrate the 78th Independence Day of India, we cherish the diversity and unity that define both India and Bahrain.

On this auspicious occasion, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all Indians, both here and back home. May the spirit of patriotism and unity continue to inspire us all.
