Dr Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, the CEO of Government Hospitals, has announced that the waiting list for cochlear implant surgeries at Salmaniya Medical Complex has been cleared as of August. This follows directions from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, as part of broader efforts to raise healthcare standards across the Kingdom.
Al Jalahma thanked His Royal Highness for his ongoing backing, which has improved the speed and quality of public health services. "The strides made by government hospitals are a result of the steady support His Royal Highness provides to enhance medical services for both citizens and residents," she noted. She stressed that cochlear implant surgeries are vital in transforming the lives of those with hearing impairments, benefiting not only the patients but their families as well.
Since early 2024, 23 cochlear implant surgeries have been performed, bringing the total to 373 since the programme began. With the waiting list now cleared, new patients can expect to have the procedure within a week of completing their assessments.
The cochlear implant team includes a group of professionals from various fields, including surgeons, consultants, audiology experts, speech and hearing therapists, a social researcher, and a psychologist.
