The Public Prosecution has announced concluding its investigation into a human trafficking case and has ordered the accused to stand trial in the High Criminal Court on August 27, 2024.

The case originated from a report filed by the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) alleging that the victim, a domestic worker, was exploited by her sponsor. The sponsor had brought her to Bahrain in 2017 and forced her to work without pay, essentially holding her in servitude. Furthermore, the sponsor prevented her from leaving the country after her contract expired and failed to renew her passport, residency, and work permit.

Upon receiving the report, the Public Prosecution swiftly initiated an investigation. The victim and witnesses were interviewed, and the accused was interrogated. He admitted to withholding the victim's wages for the entire duration of her employment.

"In line with its commitment to protecting and supporting victims of human trafficking, the Public Prosecution took necessary legal measures. The victim was placed in a shelter facility under the care of the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking. Furthermore, the Public Prosecution coordinated with relevant authorities to rectify the victim's legal status in Bahrain until the case reaches its conclusion," the statement pointed out.
