As the new school year approaches, Dr Nadia Hajjar, a primary care physician, underscored the importance of taking proactive measures to protect children from seasonal illnesses. Dr Hajjar highlighted a number of essential steps to safeguard children from seasonal influenza, other respiratory viruses, and emerging concerns like monkeypox.
"Personal hygiene is paramount," Dr Hajjar asserts. She stressed the importance of frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom. "This is a fundamental practice," she explained.
For situations where water is unavailable, Dr Hajjar recommended using hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. She also stressed the significance of proper cough and sneeze etiquette, encouraging children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or their elbow when coughing or sneezing, and to dispose of tissues immediately.
She also highlighted the role of masks in limiting the spread of viruses. "Wearing masks in crowded or high-risk environments can be effective, particularly during outbreaks," she sayed. "It's essential to teach children how to wear masks correctly."
By implementing these preventative measures, parents and educators can help create a healthier environment for children as they return to school.
