In a shocking incident in the Kingdom of Bahrain, a man lured a woman to his apartment under the pretense of sharing a meal, only to imprison, rob, and assault her. When confronted by police, he claimed she was his wife and he was "treating her".
According to the victim, she was acquainted with the suspect, a 42-year-old man. On the day of the incident, he contacted her and invited her to his apartment for lunch. "I agreed and went to his residence," she said, adding: "Upon arrival, I sat down, only to be startled when he locked the apartment door, pocketing the key. He then snatched my mobile phone and threw it from the balcony into the street,"
He proceeded to take her bag and stole her second phone, a silver necklace, a pair of wired headphones, and a silver lighter.
The suspect then began to assault her, repeatedly striking her head with his own. He also used a metal rod to beat her approximately 15 times across various parts of her body.
"I cried out for help, and later I managed to escape to the kitchen and grabbed a knife, fleeing to the bathroom and locking the door," she revealed to prosecutors.
Enraged, the suspect kicked the door repeatedly until it broke, entered the bathroom, and wrestled the knife from her hand, throwing it away.
He then kicked her several times and struck her head with a glass water bottle. He subsequently dragged her to the balcony of his apartment and locked her there for approximately two hours. She continued to scream and plead for help.
On that same day, a security guard at the building was collecting rent when a tenant informed him that a woman was crying for help and threatening to jump from a balcony.
The guard went to the apartment and heard the woman screaming and crying inside. He knocked on the door, which was opened by the suspect. The guard observed the suspect, sweating and with dirty clothes, along with the victim, also sweating, crying, and with bruises on her head and left eyelid. The apartment floor was dirty and littered with broken glass.
The guard informed the suspect about the noise complaints from neighbours and inquired about the situation. The suspect claimed there was no problem and asked the guard to leave, refusing to allow him back in. The victim attempted to signal to the guard that she was being beaten and that the suspect was preventing her from leaving and threatening to kill her. The suspect then slammed the door shut.
"I immediately reported the incident to the police," the security guard told prosecutors.
Upon arriving at the suspect's apartment, the police knocked on the door. The suspect opened the door, holding a Quran in his hand, wearing medical clothing, and carrying a metal crutch. He told the police officer that the woman was his wife and that he was "treating her with the Quran."
When the police requested to speak with the woman to ensure her safety, he refused, claiming that his wife did not speak to men. The police informed him that they were officers and needed to confirm her well-being. He then called out to the woman, and she emerged from the room. The police noticed injuries on her head but she claimed they were old and insisted she simply wanted to leave.
The victim left the apartment with the police officers and informed them that she wanted to report the suspect but did not have residency.
The following day, the security guard was informed by hotel staff that the suspect was spraying water throughout his apartment, as the door was open and they witnessed him doing so. The guard approached the suspect and asked him to stop, but the suspect told him it was none of his business. The guard then reported the incident to the police.
During investigations by the Public Prosecution, the suspect admitted to throwing the victim's phone from the balcony and confirmed that the remaining stolen items were still in his apartment.
The Public Prosecution charged the suspect with unlawful imprisonment, depriving the victim of her liberty through force, theft of the victim's belongings, and assault causing injury. The High Criminal Court has scheduled a hearing for September 10th to consider the case.
