In an exclusive interview with The Daily Tribune, Tony Davis, the Technical Development Manager and National Coach, shared how Bahrain’s boxing team has recently made remarkable strides in both domestic and international arenas.

Much of this success, he revealed, can be attributed to a well-structured development plan.

Davis has focused on building a system that gives athletes clear goals and the opportunity to compete. “It’s essential to provide boxers with something to train for and to build a system”, Davis explained.

Bahrain held its first National Championships this past June, allowing boxers to claim the respected title of ‘National Champion.’ Other domestic events, like the open-air ‘Domestic Series’ at the Dilmun Club and the high-profile ‘Royal Rumble’ charity boxing dinner, have also played an important role in maintaining momentum within the sport.

Educational Growth and Technical Development

Education has been at the heart of this growth.

“We have qualified 93 Level 1 Coaches, and our team of officials has developed well”, Davis shared.

Recently, six referees and judges passed the International 1 R&J Course and they will look to put their knowledge to the test at the upcoming ISF Gymnasiade.

Mental and Physical Preparedness

Davis stresses that boxing is both a mental and physical game. “In the gym, we develop our boxers technically first, then work on their mental strength, guiding them on what to expect”, he said.

This comprehensive preparation allows Bahrain’s athletes to remain calm and focused under pressure.

Eye on the Olympics

Davis’ leadership was instrumental in Bahrain’s qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which was a record-breaking achievement for the Kingdom.

Although they just missed out on Paris 2024, Davis is already preparing the team for LA 2028. “We’re continuing everything we’ve put in place, focusing on building for the future”, he explained.
