For over a quarter of a century, the Indian Ladies Association (ILA) has been lighting a path to success through its Speak Easy English Classes, a program designed to empower individuals from all walks of life.
This initiative, a cornerstone of ILA’s community outreach, has helped thousands of participants — particularly low-income workers and aspirational professionals — improve their communication skills and, ultimately, their career prospects.
At a special event celebrating the latest launch of the program, chief guests Tosin Arowojolu and Sudheer Thirunilath inspired attendees with powerful speeches.
Value of communication Both leaders, respected for their contributions in leadership development and humanitarian work, underscored the value of communication in personal and professional growth.
The two-month course, carefully curated by the Speak Easy Subcommittee, offers participants the chance to hone their English speaking skills under the guidance of dedicated and experienced teachers. “Around 2,500 students have benefited from this initiative,” says Swasti Mehta, a long-standing instructor of 23 years.
“We’ve witnessed remarkable transformations — professionals advancing in their careers, housewives gaining confidence to support their children’s education, and individuals finding better-paying jobs.” Holistic growth Beyond language, the program also addresses holistic growth.
Guest lectures by doctors, advocates, and experts inform participants about health issues, legal rights, and the latest labour laws, extending the program’s impact to entire families. “Our goal is not just to teach English, but to improve lives,” Mehta emphasizes.
Despite challenges during the pandemic, the classes continued online, ensuring that no student was left behind. As Mehta reflects, “When one is determined to teach and learn, even hurdles like COVID can be overcome.”
The Speak Easy English Classes stand as a testament to the power of community-led initiatives. ILA invites more participants to join the current session, continuing its mission of fostering growth, empowerment, and opportunity.
