Plans for a pedestrian bridge connecting Khalifa Al Kabeer Walkway to the Arad Fort walkway have been delayed due to major roadworks affecting access to Bahrain International Airport. The Works Ministry has identified ongoing construction at Falcon Junction as a key issue, warning that building the bridge could disrupt crucial infrastructure and airport access. The bridge, proposed by Muharraq Municipal Council member Ahmed Al Moqahwi, was intended to improve pedestrian access and increase foot traffic to the historic area.
However, Works Minister, His Excellency Ebrahim Al Hawaj, informed his counterpart at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs, Wael Al Mubarak, that further studies are needed before the project can proceed. Al Hawaj explained, “After reviewing the proposed bridge locations with Municipal Council member Ahmed Al Moqahwi, we found that both potential sites intersect with the Falcon Junction Development Project, the first phase of the main road upgrade leading to Bahrain International Airport.”

The study, conducted with local officials, uncovered engineering difficulties and potential disruptions to infrastructure, particularly concerning the main road to the airport. Al Hawaj emphasised that any construction would need to account for its impact on surrounding properties and services. Funding constraints are also a significant issue, with the ministry unable to finance the bridge at this time. This has disappointed residents and local groups who had looked forward to improved connectivity between the two walkways. The Ministry acknowledged the Municipal Council’s initiative and encouraged exploring alternative methods to enhance the area’s infrastructure. Local communities and interested parties are advised to stay informed as discussions about pedestrian access continue
