Immediate action to tackle the pressing parking crisis at Muharraq Souq includes plans for 300 new parking spaces, a crucial step towards revitalising the market and securing its future success.

Abdulaziz Al Naar, Chairman of the Muharraq Municipal Council, stressed the urgency of addressing this ongoing crisis, asserting that it is vital for the survival of Muharraq Souq.

The council has long advocated for expanding parking facilities to better serve citizens, tourists, and visitors, aligning with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities’ ambitious market development initiative.

Representing the fourth district, Al Naar confirmed that the development plan for the traditional market includes the construction of 300 parking spaces, emphasising the need to keep the market vibrant and accessible for all.

The council convened with traders and investors, proposing the exemption of municipal fees for shops during this challenging transitional phase.

Al Naar highlighted the council’s focus on the welfare of shop owners and the preservation of the market’s reputation. Discussions with the Authority have led to the addition of parking spaces that had previously been overlooked. After consulting with traders and investors, the council suggested waiving municipal fees for shopkeepers throughout the redevelopment period.

Access

“The municipal council is dedicated to providing parking and ensuring access near the shops without interfering with the market development project,” he stated. He elaborated, “We have asked the Authority to maintain parking spaces.

They are providing street parking and working on acquiring multi-storey lots on the outskirts.

Completing the development work and creating additional parking on the same street is essential for easing access for visitors.” Al Naar reiterated that the council’s focus remains on the market’s popularity and the interests of local shops.

Continued dialogue with Authority officials has led to the incorporation of parking spaces not originally part of the project.
