Dr Hussain Yusuf Al Harmi, a renowned pediatric ophthalmologist and strabismus specialist, has stressed the importance of early eye examinations for children before they begin school.
He emphasised that early detection can help identify any visual problems that may hinder a child’s ability to learn, interact academically, and engage socially.
Dr Al Harmi outlined several signs that may indicate vision problems, including difficulty reading or writing, covering one eye, tilting the head while focusing, and complaining of headaches or fatigue during reading.
Academic underperformance
He warned that poor eyesight can lead to academic underperformance, impacting a child’s self-confidence, learning motivation, and social interactions.
The ophthalmologist highlighted the importance of basic eye examinations for children before entering school, including visual acuity tests, colour vision assessments, and assessments of eye coordination.
He also stressed that a family history of vision problems can increase the risk of visual issues in children, making a thorough medical history crucial.
Breaks
Dr Al Harmi advised parents to ensure their children undergo regular eye examinations and encourage them to take breaks while using electronic devices.
He explained that available solutions for vision problems include eyeglasses, treatment for amblyopia (lazy eye), visual or motor exercises, and, in some cases, surgery. Dr Al Harmi cautioned against the impact of electronic devices on children’s vision, recommending limited screen time and encouraging breaks.
