The National Center for Social Studies and Research in Saudi Arabia has unveiled a recent study examining the attitudes of Saudi citizens toward marrying non-Saudis. The study sheds light on the growing trend of Saudis choosing life partners from outside their social circle and explores the key reasons behind this decision. According to the findings, which were reviewed by Al Arabiya.net, the weighted percentage of Saudis marrying foreigners stands at an estimated 64.8%.
The study, led by Dr. Mohammed Al-Toum from Imam Muhammad bin Saud University, identified several factors influencing this decision. A lack of kinship between the spouses, advancing age, and the increased need for care in later life are among the significant reasons. Additionally, high marriage costs, emotional relationships between partners, and the failure of previous marriages between Saudi nationals were also cited as contributors to this growing trend.
Cultural and Social Impacts
The study emphasized that the rising number of cross-national marriages may lead to notable changes in the social and cultural fabric of Saudi families. New customs and traditions brought by foreign spouses could influence household dynamics and challenge the reinforcement of the community's authentic cultural identity. However, the study also highlighted that such unions could foster increased social connections and promote cultural openness.
While the introduction of different traditions might be seen by some as diluting the country’s cultural roots, others view it as an opportunity for greater societal and cultural exchange, bringing with it new perspectives and practices.
Rising Trend
In support of these findings, a 2020 report by the General Authority for Statistics noted that 4,502 marriage contracts involved one non-Saudi spouse. These figures are based solely on contracts registered with the Saudi Ministry of Justice, indicating that mixed-nationality marriages are on the rise.
The trend underscores the importance of understanding the evolving dynamics within Saudi society, as individuals seek partners not just within their immediate communities, but globally. As the Kingdom continues to embrace modernity while upholding its traditions, these new family structures are bound to play a role in shaping the future of Saudi society.
Conclusion
The report’s findings point to a shift in the personal choices of Saudi citizens, with broader implications for the nation's social fabric. As the Kingdom continues to navigate the complexities of global interconnectedness, cross-national marriages are likely to remain a significant part of its evolving social landscape.
