Young Bahrainis are at the forefront of the country’s urban development, driving key projects and helping to achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, according to two ministers marking World Habitat Day.
Her Excellency Amna bint Ahmed Al Rumaihi, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, and H.E. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, both stressed the crucial role of youth in shaping Bahrain’s urban future.
They attributed this progress to the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, with the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
Al Rumaihi emphasised the importance of young people, especially those working in engineering and services, in advancing SDG 11, which aims to create inclusive, safe, and sustainable cities. She said the enthusiasm and creativity of Bahrain’s youth have been key to the success of national projects.
Al Mubarak echoed these views, describing Bahrain’s young people as the ‘real capital of the future’, playing a central role in the country’s urban planning. International recognition
He pointed to international recognition from organisations like the United Nations Development Programme and the UN Human Settlements Programme, praising Bahrain’s continuous efforts in urban development and youth involvement.
Both ministers welcomed the theme of this year’s World Habitat Day, ‘Engaging youth to create a better urban future’, as it reflects the global focus on youth participation in development.
They noted that Bahrain is aligned with this priority, placing young people at the forefront of its urban and sustainability initiatives.
Al Rumaihi also highlighted the contributions of her ministry’s engineers, who have been instrumental in delivering key housing projects to the highest standards.
Sustainable environments These developments, she added, are creating sustainable environments for both residents and visitors, with Bahrain’s housing projects gaining international recognition.
Al Mubarak outlined several key initiatives led by his ministry, including a national tree-planting campaign aimed at doubling the number of trees in Bahrain by 2035.
Other projects involve developing parks, markets, and green spaces to enhance the Kingdom’s urban areas.
The ministers reaffirmed Bahrain’s dedication to urban sustainability, with youth involvement continuing to play a central role in the Kingdom’s development plans for the future.
