Plans to expand the beach area near the fishermen’s port in Hidd to include a public beach have attracted renewed attention, with efforts underway to develop the area for the dual use of swimmers and fishermen.

The aim is to ensure that these beaches are suitable for swimming while also providing a recreational space for residents.

The Muharraq Municipal Council has unanimously voted to urge the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs to address this pressing need, seeking to create a shared space that caters to both beachgoers and fishermen — an initiative long desired by local residents.

To meet the rising demand for public beaches, the project will repurpose a section of the coastline currently used by fishermen.

Necessity

Council member Mohammed Al Moqahwi highlighted this necessity.

“We are fortunate to be surrounded by the sea; however, our shores require attention to better serve the community.

The residents of Hidd deserve improved access to our coastal areas,” Al Moqahwi told The Daily Tribune Additionally, Al Moqahwi noted ongoing developments at Hidd Port, which include relocating the fish market and constructing a bridge to connect East Hidd City to Dry Dock Road.

He emphasised, “Fishermen depend on these waters for their livelihoods, and any expansion must take this into account.” This initiative follows a previous proposal made in April that suggested creating a beach on Hidd’s eastern coast.

Permits

Since then, the municipal committee has amended the original plan and secured the necessary permits for redevelopment.

Al Moqahwi added, “The community has long requested better recreational spaces, and this project will provide a dedicated swimming area for residents.”

With council officials expected to monitor the project’s progress closely, updates will be provided to keep the community informed.
