Locals refer to it as the ‘Death Road’ — a dangerous stretch of highway in Muharraq where at least five lives have been lost.
After years of fatal accidents, councillors have now approved a pedestrian bridge for the Khalifa Al Kabeer Highway, which runs between Omar bin Al Khattab School and the fishermen’s port.
The area is often crossed by seasoned fishermen hauling their catch, putting them at serious risk.
Councillor Abdulaziz Al Naar noted the hazards faced by both fishermen and visitors to the port. “There’s an accident here every year.
The road has a dangerous bend, and the gate is positioned right on it, making it impossible to see oncoming traffic, especially with the trees blocking the view,” he explained.
The speed limit along this road is 100 km/h, and pedestrians frequently misjudge the speed of approaching vehicles, leading to numerous accidents.
Al Naar added that local residents had submitted a petition, signed by many, requesting urgent action on the matter.
“We are now looking for a company to build the bridge and have already secured donors willing to fund it,” he said, stressing the need for approvals from the Ministry of Municipalities and the Ministry of Works.
The council is currently awaiting official clearance from the ministries before moving forward with construction, which many see as a crucial step towards improving safety in the area.
