Drivers running red lights on Avenue 65 in Durrat Al Muharraq are raising concerns about public safety in the area.

Fadel Al Oud, a member of Muharraq Municipal Council, is urging the installation of traffic cameras, stressing the need for quick action at the busy Durrat Al Muharraq junction, where some drivers disregard traffic signals.

The absence of cameras has encouraged many to flout the law, endangering other motorists. For the record, reckless drivers are responsible for dozens of traffic violations weekly, contributing to at least two accidents per month.

Reckless

Al Oud pointed out that the municipal council had already advised placing cameras at the junction, calling the behaviour of these drivers reckless and a threat to public safety. “Motorists are blatantly ignoring red lights, putting lives at risk with their disregard for the rules,” Al Oud said.

During the most recent municipal meeting in Muharraq, Al Oud stated, “The signal is dangerous because there are two closely spaced traffic signals, with one appearing just ahead of the other, which causes confusion for drivers.

We contacted the General Directorate of Traffic, and they told us that they would install a camera on this road.

We hope for a swift installation to prevent any traffic accidents.”

Monitoring systems

When contacted, the General Directorate of Traffic explained that current monitoring systems, such as speed and redlight cameras, were being prioritised in other locations.

However, they assured that Avenue 65 would be included in future plans as more systems become available. Though Al Oud expressed appreciation for the Directorate’s response, he renewed his call for immediate measures to prevent further danger at the junction.
