Local fish markets have recently experienced a welcome stabilization in both prices and quantities, following a prolonged period of significantly inflated prices and unprecedented scarcity.
In a survey conducted by our sister newspaper Al Ayam last week, Abu Hamed, a vendor at the popular Damistan market, reported a high demand for imported fish such as sea bass, snapper, salmon, and kingfish due to their readily available supply.
He noted that while locally sourced fish like safi and Kurkufan are available in limited quantities, some days see a wider variety, including hamoor, sha’ari, and others. Bahraini shrimp, he added, remains consistently popular.
Stable
Abu Hamed stated that prices are currently relatively stable after a sharp increase during the peak of last summer.
He cited the price of Bahraini safi fish as an example, noting that smaller sizes currently range from BD2 to BD2.5 per kilogram, while medium-sized safi ranges from BD4 to BD6 per kilogram.
The market anticipates an increase in the supply of kingfish in the coming period. A seasonal ban on kingfish fishing, lasting from August 15th to October 15th, is expected to be lifted soon by the Supreme Council for the Environment, leading to a greater availability of this popular fish.
