Worldwide the month of October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Middle East Hospital, in association with Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation (Al Hurr), Free Labour Union of Bahrain Airport Company and National Labour Union Gulf Air, organised a breast awareness campaign at Gulf Air premises.

The aim of the event was to educate the attendees on the early detection, prevention strategies and available treatments for breast cancer.

It was opened with a keynote presentation by Dr Amer Al Derazi, renowned Consultant General & Bariatric Surgery and CEO of Middle East Hospital, followed by presentation of Dr Shaista Sariwal, Specialist Obstetrics & Gynaecologist & Cosmetic Gynaecologist, who highlighted the importance of early detection in improving the survival rates.

Dr Haitham Al Rahma, Obstetrician & Gynaecologist also attended the event as part of the Hospital’s medical team.

They also conducted on-site body composition analysis and basic vitals and health checkups.

Prevention and support services

Informational pamphlets were distributed, providing details on breast cancer prevention, support services and the importance of maintaining regular health check-ups.

The event was also attended by the inspirational cancer survivor, Ms Farah Ali, who shared her motivating battle against breast cancer and encouraged women to mandatory take routine medical check-ups.

Famous media personality, Ms Marwa Khalil was also the part of the event, contributing to the noble cause of community awareness.

The workshop featured interactive sessions, including a demonstration of proper self-examination techniques educated by healthcare professionals.

Warning signs and risk factors

Attendees were taught how to recognise warning signs and risk factors, including family history, lifestyle habits and environmental influences.

A question-and-answer session allowed participants to ask questions about screening, diagnosis and treatment options, addressing the most prevalent common myths and misconceptions associated with breast cancer.

The workshop concluded with the commitment from both the organisers and the attendees to continue raising awareness and supporting breast cancer research and education efforts year-round.
