More than 45 per cent of car owners now sail through vehicle inspections at private centres, following a government shake-up that’s slashing queues and costs – no more Traffic Directorate frustrations.

The government has revealed that bringing private operators into the fold has smoothed out the inspection process for drivers. Gone are the long trips to the Traffic Directorate, with its endless waiting times.

Private centres, boasting 23 inspection lanes and 56 inspectors, offer competitive prices, making the service both accessible and efficient.

After this shift, the Interior Minister issued Decision No. (51) of 2024, officially allowing licensed private centres to carry out inspections. These centres now work according to schedules set by the Traffic Directorate, although the directorate retains the right to inspect vehicles whenever necessary to ensure roadworthiness.

Responding to a parliamentary proposal to adjust inspection hours at the Traffic Directorate, the government reiterated its approach of involving the private sector. So far, 11 centres have met the required standards, with more applications currently under review.

This change highlights the government’s approach to improving public services. By engaging the private sector, authorities now offer inspections outside standard working hours, including on public holidays, providing added convenience for vehicle owners.

The Traffic Directorate’s role has shifted from providing the service to overseeing its quality. The government ensures that private centres maintain the necessary standards, with regular inspections – both scheduled and surprise checks – to keep service levels in check.
