RCSI Medical University of Bahrain Diabetes Mobile Unit Awarded First Place in Prestigious Voluntary Work Awards

In the presence of His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health and President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) – Medical University of Bahrain celebrated the achievement of the Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU) receiving First Place as Best Bahraini Voluntary Project during the closing ceremony of the 14th edition of His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa Award for Voluntary Work, held last month.
His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Health and President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society commented, “I extend my congratulations to the Diabetes Mobile Unit (DMU) team for receiving this esteemed accolade which recognises the DMU’s significant contribution to community health through its innovative approach to educating children and empowering them to adopt a health-conscious mindset and lead a healthy lifestyle.”
The ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Dr Diana Abdulkarim Al Jahrami, Secretary General of the Higher Education Council (HEC) and Deputy Chairperson of the Higher Education Council Board of Trustees; Her Excellency Dr Mariam AlHajeri, Vice President of the Bahrain Diabetes Society; Chancellor, Professor Shaikh Khalid bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, President of Rotary Club of Manama; Mr Stephen Harrison Mirfield, Managing Director at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain; Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and members of the University’s senior management and the DMU team.
Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, stated: “Receiving this recognition is a testament to the DMU’s efforts and success over the years in providing diabetes education and support to children and their families in Bahrain. As a health sciences University, we are dedicated to addressing prevalent health challenges through community outreach efforts and research to improve the health and well-being of the Bahraini community and future generations.”
Established in 2012, the DMU is a collaborative partnership between RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, Bahrain Diabetes Society, and the Rotary Club of Manama, with the valued support of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health. The programme has enabled RCSI Medical University of Bahrain students to engage with over 6,200 children through educational activities focused on diabetes awareness, promoting healthy lifestyle choices and empowering children to take control of their health.
