Three men of Asian descent have been arrested after a failed bid to escape from Bahraini Coast Guard officers while fishing illegally near Umm Jaleed Island. The trio was caught red-handed using outlawed bottom trawling nets to scoop up shrimp, a practice banned due to its destructive impact on marine life. The Coast Guard spotted the boat in the restricted waters and ordered the crew to halt.

Instead, the suspects attempted to flee, only to be quickly apprehended. Their catch — still fresh from the sea — was seized, and the boat was impounded. The haul of shrimp has since been sold off at a public auction. According to a statement from the Public Prosecution yesterday, the suspects have admitted to the charges, which include obstructing law enforcement during the inspection. Authorities have launched further inquiries to identify any others involved in the illicit fishing operation.
