Plans for a 250 per cent traffic increase on the frequently congested Rayya Highway were a key focus at yesterday’s Muharraq Council meeting. Discussions were led by a Ministry of Works representative, Engineer Hamad Bado, who provided the latest updates on the project.

He reported that 90 per cent of Phase 1B is now complete. This phase, which began in September last year, involves widening the highway to two lanes in each direction, installing traffic lights, upgrading drainage, and enhancing lighting. Utility channels It also includes laying underground utility channels and erecting road signs. Looking ahead, Phase 2 will cover a 3.8-kilometre stretch of the road.

The plan is to widen it to two dual carriageways and make further upgrades. However, part of the required land is privately owned, meaning work can only proceed once permissions and funding are secured.

Link Additionally, Rayya Highway is set to be linked to the Muharraq Ring Road, which is expected to ease traffic around Al Dair, Samaheej, and Qalali. With 10 per cent of the connection already completed, the project is expected to be finished by March 2025.

Currently, the highway handles 1,900 vehicles per hour, which exceeds its limit of 1,600. Once the upgrades are complete, the road will be able to accommodate 4,000 vehicles per hour.
