The Muharraq Municipal Council is being left out of key decisions on the use of public land, according to Deputy Chairman Saleh Buhazza. He said this goes against a clear order from the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, which had called for a joint committee to deal with these matters. Buhazza voiced concern over the way things are being handled, stressing that council members should be at the heart of decisions that affect their areas.
Order
“The minister’s order couldn’t have been clearer,” he said. “Council members are needed for these choices, especially when it comes to investments. Good results depend on working together.” He pointed out that looking after investments is a key job for the councils, as it’s about managing public property and making sure money is put to good use.
“These are public lands that shape how our country is seen,” Buhazza said. “Some of these leases could last for decades, so the council needs to have a say to make sure things are done properly.” To deal with the issue, Buhazza said an urgent request had been made to the executive body, asking them to involve the council when reviewing investment offers.
“Council members know their districts well and understand local needs,” he said. “Many successful projects were only made possible because the council stepped in to make sure there was enough support from the public.” Buhazza’s remarks raise concern that keeping the council out of the process could harm the long-term care of public land in the city.
