The House of Representatives is set to vote on Tuesday on a proposal urging the government to revitalise Manama Souq, the historic marketplace.  The proposal, submitted by MPs Ahmed Qarata, Mohsen Al Asboul, Mahmoud Mirza, Hassan Bukhmas, and Mamdouh Al Saleh, aims to restore the souq's historical and cultural significance, showcasing Bahrain's traditions and heritage to tourists.

The Services Committee of the House of Representatives has recommended approval of the proposal, citing several key considerations:  Manama Souq is one of the oldest and most important commercial centers in Bahrain, serving as a major hub for wholesalers and supplying retailers across the country.

However, the souq suffers from poor planning and structural issues, making a heritage-style redevelopment crucial.  These issues include infestations of pests, a lack of adequate parking and public facilities (restrooms, shaded areas, restaurants, etc.), and other infrastructural deficiencies.

In its response to the proposal, the Ministry of Tourism highlighted that a tender has been issued through the Tender Board to appoint a consulting engineering firm to develop key areas within Manama Souq.

The evaluation of bids and award of the contract were completed in the first quarter of this year. The selected firm will oversee the development of the Bab Al Bahrain complex, the renovation and redesign of the roof of the market area adjacent to Bab Al Bahrain (known as "Al Musaqaf"), the development of Al Tawaweesh Square and Wednesday Market Square, the upgrading of traditional cafes, and the transformation of several key locations and walkways into museums showcasing the history of Manama Souq.  The upcoming parliamentary vote will determine whether this plan receives official backing.
