His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS), has significantly enhanced athlete welfare in Bahrain by issuing Decision No. (18) of 2024, establishing the Supreme Committee for Sports Medicine.

The newly formed committee will be chaired by HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, with Brigadier Dr. Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa Al Khalifa serving as Deputy Chair. The committee includes prominent members such as Dr. Abdulrahman Sadiq Askar, CEO of the General Sports Authority (GSA); Faris Mustafa Al Kooheji, Secretary-General of the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC); Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Ansari, CEO of the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA); and Dr. Lulwa Rashid Showaiter, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health.

Key responsibilities include:

Enhancing Athletic Performance

One of the committee's primary objectives is to enhance sports performance through recommendations on nutrition, training, and modern health techniques. The initiative aims to maintain the health of athletes while preventing injuries and diseases. The committee will also prepare studies, research, and proposals for establishing specialized centers in sports medicine and will seek to build partnerships with advanced medical entities in the field.

Formation of Sub-Committees

Under the new edict, the committee chair or deputy has the authority to create specialized sub-committees focused on specific areas of sports medicine. These sub-committees will report to the Supreme Committee, with their mandates, powers, and operations defined in the formation decision. They will conduct studies and execute assigned duties, providing thorough advice in designated areas specified by the Supreme Committee.

This initiative marks a significant advancement in Bahrain’s commitment to promoting athlete health and performance, reinforcing the nation’s position as a leader in sports development in the region.
